Jane's Notes: The Montezuma Oropendola’s display is as unusual as its call, a crescendo of sharp electronic bubbling squeals that sounds like a cross between a primitive wind instrument and R2-D2 being electrocuted. During courtship, the oropendola (Spanish for “golden pendulum”) literally swings into action, rolling upside-down on a branch like a gymnast on the uneven bars. I hung the oropendola off Nicaragua, savoring those moments when I could make landmasses and birds a compositional pair. I most enjoyed painting its graphic face. The Icterid’s two-toned beak protrudes from its forehead like a horn.
