Jane’s Notes: The Harris’s Sparrow demonstrates how muted colors can create striking beauty. The inky black smudge from its crown to breast communicates this bird as male. The remnant in the study reveals how I had originally composed the Harris’s Sparrow standing flat on the ground along the coast of Canada's Hudson Bay, but tweaked its posture in the final study and painting to give it a more dynamic composition.
