Jane's Notes: The hummingbirds were a hotly debated family. Unique to the New World, everyone had their favorite. We landed on Peru's spatuletail for its noteworthy rear-end and minute range. I had to depict him in display rather than flight because his tail-feathers--up to three times the length of his body--were otherwise too long to for the crowded South America region. Rendering its wings in flight was a fun exercise since I usually only observe hummingbird wings as blurs. It's hypodermic beak is marked by the thinnest pair of pencil marks.
