Jane's Notes: The Kakapo represents one of the most developed drawings in the portfolio. I felt tremendous pressure to get it right, as it’s fervently loved in its New Zealand homeland. It stands at eye level and is one of the first subjects I painted. As the world’s largest parrot and only one without the ability to fly, it’s also a complex and unusual bird. I gave particular focus to the auricular feathers around its eyes and the scaling on its feet, which I wanted to feel weighty and powerful. In creating the textures and marks on its back, I sought to find the individual edges of the feather and their general pattern. This study provided the structure I needed to paint the final, complex, details.

Each study comes with a certificate of authenticity. Please allow six weeks for custom matting and delivery. All sales final.
