Jane's Notes: Hesperonis (100-66 million years old) represents birds’ evolution from the ground and sky to the water. It has anatomy similar to modern birds but has still retained its teeth. I composed Hesperornis as if it were diving for dinner. The hatch marks and shading techniques I used for the extinct birds are particularly evident in the contours and edges of its feathers. Because the extinct animals on the mural are painted in grey-scale, the pen-and-ink studies were transferred to the wall line-for-line, making these studies nearly identical to the final paintings.
