Jane's Notes: Composing the cormorant in its iconic sunning pose was an easy choice. Cormorants are fabulous water birds. Their dense inner feathers insulate, while their looser outer feathers allow them to maneuver as if they had fins--but do require drying in the sun. Their wings are so graphic; cormorants really do have black outlines around each feather. This offered me the opportunity to create a graphite study with gradients of blacks, browns, and blue, transforming what some might consider a dull subject into a thrilling artistic exercise.
