Jane's Notes: Penguin feathers stress me out. They’re so specialized. Emperor Penguins have more than 100,000 tiny, sharp, dense feathers that present as a single smooth shape. With those broad black backs, there’s a danger of turning subtle texture into a polished bowling ball. After drawing the study I had nerves about capturing the texture of this magnificent bird quickly, especially one so close to the scrutiny of ground level. I was pleased with the final result—a regal, textured bird, doing its best to ignore a pestering sheathbill.
